DepEd – Zamboanga Sibugay – The Schools Division Office of Zamboanga Sibugay reached another height of success as it launched, the 2022 National Women’s Month Celebration through webinar series focused on “Gender Equality and Women Empowerment for a Sustainable Tomorrow” via Facebook Live and Microsoft Teams hosted by teacher-anchors Ellen Mae F. Villasis, Teacher I of Ipil Heights Elementary School (ES), Elvin A. Esmeralda, Teacher III, Pangi ES and Miguel Napoleon A. Calizar, Teacher III, Maasin ES. 

Deped personnel, public and private school teachers, social workers, parents and even students were invited to watch the live streaming. The week-long event which transpired from March 28-31, 2022 was anchored on the theme: Agenda ng Kababihan Tungo sa Kaunlaran."

Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Jeanelyn A. Aleman, CESO VI delivered her message of encouragement and inspiration. “Women and young girls play a vital role in nation building. I commend the organizing team for the very impressive and laudable series of activities for Women’s Month” she stressed. 

School Governance and Operations Division - Education Program Specialist, Rosmindo L. Ancheta, Jr. gave a brief statement of purpose of why and how the event was put into a realization and talked over on the expanded limited Face-to-Face classes. “Few schools in the Division of Zamboanga Sibugay opened last February 28, 2022. The process was highly dynamic and tedious since the number of schools participating were gradually increasing” he said. 

Topics about Gender Awareness were intensively discussed by Project Development Officer II, Youth Formation Unit, Nora D. Albiso and GAD Focal Person and Teacher III of Makilas National High School, Noel Mark M. Torralba. They emphasized the legal basis in celebrating Women’s Month, the concept of equality, gender issues, gender mainstreaming and clarification to the common misconception between gender and sex.

Discussion on RA 9262 “Anti-Violence Against Women and Children” was prudently explained by invited PNP personnel, PLT. Marlene A. Galvez, C.PIO/WCPD, PPO and PSMS April Joy T. Reales, WCPD, PNCO. The session gave much information and awareness about women’s protection against abuses and all other related issues that could lead to stress, psychological, emotional, health problems and worst, death among women and children.

Magna Carta for Women - Provision on Leave, privileges of the employees entitled of maternity and all other types of leave were expounded thoroughly by Administrative Officer IV-Personnel Section, Renz Roy A. Ramos.

Teenage Pregnancy, Adolescent Reproductive Health-Comprehensive Sexuality Education or ARH-CSE were then presented subsequently including the relevance of reproductive health and how it could affect, if by choice, anybody disregards self-control, priorities, and abstinence especially at an early age.

Mental Health Awareness, tips on how to keep oneself mentally stable and how a person can identify and extend help to someone experiencing mental health crisis, orientation on Psychosocial Support Services (PSS) for learners and handling stress and all other aspects that could affect learners in times of pandemic were vital topics utterly discussed. 

The setup of the “new normal” in education is “very challenging” for both parents and learners that is why psychosocial support plays an essential role in handling different situations. 

“Effects of Smoking to Women’s Health” based on the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey Report was very comprehensive as specific examples were provided of how smoking and e-cigarettes or vaping affect women’s health was explained by Leoden A. Paraon, RN. 

While giving Deped Vaccination Program updates, Nurse II/Nurse-In-Charge, Saniata D. Baral, RN and Nurse II of Buug NHS, Merrychris N. Gustillo, RN, encouraged parents to support the program for their children’s health and safety and to avoid misinformation about the vaccine.

Senior Education Program Specialist, Alma Fraulein N. Garcia, Ed.D. expressed heartfelt gratitude to the organizing team and the support   of all department heads and personnel with the leadership of SDS Aleman and ASDS Aurelio A. Santisas for the stirring outcome and success of the first ever National Women’s Month Celebration through webinar series.

It was indeed a celebration not just for women empowerment but a celebration of team effort. Sibugay Division Office eagerly and decisively initiates and brings out not just quality work and education but innovative events like no other. (DepEd_EFV_RGL_05262022)
